Not all rawhide chews are alike!
In an effort to cut cost, some manufacturers of rawhide pet products import hides that are often inferior to the fresh U.S. beef hides used in top grade products such as the Wholesome Hide® brand dog chews. These hides, from Mexico, China, Korea, Thailand or South American countries, are typically thinner than hides from grain-fed American cattle. Due to the lack of good roads and refrigerated vehicles in these countries, these hides are usually treated with harsh and potentially harmful chemicals to preserve them from their long trip to the processing plant.
Many of these inferior hides are dyed white by titanium dioxide, an ingredient commonly used in making paint.
